Do you know that Skandmata is the fifth goddess of Navratri and in Navratri, the Goddess Durga is worshipped in her Skandmata form? The name Skandmata means mother of Skand or Kartikeya.

The Goddess in this form has a fair or golden complexion. She sits on a lion & has four hands. She carries lotus in two of her hands. Also, she has Lord Skanda or Kartikeya seated on her lap.

This form of Devi Durga is especially significant. Reason being, it shows the Goddess in her mother form. The Goddess looks after the whole.

Story of Skandmata:

Devi Skandmata or Parvati is the daughter of Himalaya & the wife of Lord Shiva. According to some religious beliefs, once a demon named Tarakasur was troubling the whole universe.

He had a boon that he could be killed only by the son of Lord Shiva. However, as Lord Shiva was a solitary person, he didn’t marry.

So, Tarakasur became more violent as he believed that he is famous. Later Lord Shiva was married to Goddess Parvati. After that, Lord Kartikeya or Skandkumar was born. Henceforth, Goddess Parvati came to be known as Skandmata.

The Goddess is extremely defensive about her son. Skandmata form of the Goddess is very motherly & lovingly. She showers all her motherly love on her devotees who worship her today.

She fulfills all the desires of her devotees and blesses him/ her with ultimate joy & ecstasy.

On the fifth day of Navratri, Goddess Skandmata is worshipped together with Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. The puja starts with chanting the mantras and offering an herb called Alsi.
